Phew! What a day!
Two weeks of planning and preparation for the annual Uru Mānuka Student Summit. With the uncertainty of which level we would be at for the Summit, a decision was made to trial this online. There was a lot of work around how to present to an online audience, and the students were all able to go back to the learning they had during Lockdown about online etiquette.
Despite the initial nerves, the two teams from Wigram presented their toolkits with pride. It really helped having two sessions back-to-back with a few minutes in between to reflect on their previous presentation. I asked the presenters what they thought went positively and then what they thought they could work on in their next session. For both groups, their second sessions went much better and they came away with huge smiles on their faces.
This Summit was a learning curve for me, in that there was a lot of organisation required to get it going. While I wasn't the one in charge of the whole thing (hats off to Kelsey for organising it all!!) I felt like a mother hen, making sure that all of my brood was ready and coping with what was going on, so when they all finished, my smile matched theirs - one of satisfaction, pride and... relief!
Both teams did so well I thought they deserved a sugar boost in the form of iced chocolates. With even bigger smiles, we headed down to Muffin Break to celebrate their successes.
I really enjoyed working with the two teams closely on something they knew they would excel in. It was interesting to see how some students are good at things but need a little bit of guidance when they are teaching it. I was able to reflect on my teaching and think about how my wording or teaching may be pitched at too high a level. How can I teach new concepts without using too much 'expert' jargon, but also not diluting the content?
I come away feeling content and proud and already looking forward to next year's Summit.
Awesome work! I too was super proud of your wee presenters! AMAZING STUFF!
ReplyDeleteLucky them getting to go out and celebrate their success. I am looking forward to reading about their reflections on their blogs.
Thanks for sharing your reflection on here. It will be something to look back on and guide you as we move to our next online event! (It's also great modelling for the kids!)
See you when I am next in!

Hey
ReplyDeleteGreat job on organising the Wigram team for the student Summit. It is such a powerful tool for the learners to be able to teach a tool. Such a great experience. As what Kelsey said I look forward to hearing about their reflections and how they found it.
